Description

The Patrol 6HD Gen 2 is Leupold's answer for anyone who wants one optic that can do the job of a red dot and a mid-range scope without compromising on either end. At 1x, the flat, distortion-free image and bright FireDot center let you run it both eyes open like a dot sight. Crank the integrated throw lever to 6x and that same clean Duplex reticle gives you an uncluttered sight picture for precise work at distance. No busy grid taking up half the glass, just a crisp aiming point that gets out of the way.

The second generation brings some genuinely useful upgrades. Motion Sensor Technology shuts the illumination down after five minutes of inactivity and wakes it back up the instant the rifle moves, which means you stop burning batteries on the bench. The electronic reticle leveling system flashes the reticle when the scope is canted, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of mounting and helps keep longer shots true. Guard-ion lens coating sheds water and smudges, and flip-back lens covers come in the box. Push-button illumination control is simple to run under stress, and the etched glass reticle stays visible even with a dead battery.

Built from a single piece of 6061-T6 aluminum, the scope runs 10.8 inches long and weighs 16.2 ounces, which keeps a duty or competition carbine quick-handling instead of nose-heavy. The 30mm tube houses 1/4 MOA adjustments with plenty of travel, and the whole thing is argon/krypton purged so it stays waterproof and fogproof in rough weather. Leupold's Professional-Grade Optical System handles glare and low light better than just about anything in this class, which matters a lot more in the real world than spec-sheet numbers.

This one makes the most sense for patrol rifles, home-defense carbines, 3-gun rigs, and training guns that see hard use. It's designed, machined, and assembled in the USA and backed by Leupold's lifetime guarantee, so it's the kind of optic you mount once and stop thinking about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a true 1x optic that I can use like a red dot?

Yes. The optical system is designed to deliver a flat, distortion-free image at 1x, so you can shoot with both eyes open and the bright FireDot center works much like a red dot for close, fast work. It's one of the better LPVOs out there for that kind of speed.

What's different about the Gen 2 compared to the original Patrol 6HD?

The Gen 2 adds an electronic reticle leveling system that flashes when the scope is canted, an integrated low-profile throw lever, and Guard-ion lens coating to repel water and smudges. It also includes flip-back lens covers in the box. The core strengths like the daylight-bright FireDot illumination and Motion Sensor Technology carry over.

Is the reticle still usable if the battery dies?

It is. The FireDot Duplex is etched into the glass, so only the illuminated center dot goes away if the battery quits. You'll still have a full black duplex reticle to aim with, which is a big advantage over a standard red dot.

Is the reticle in the first or second focal plane?

It's a second focal plane design, so the reticle stays the same size throughout the magnification range. That keeps the duplex crosshair bold and easy to pick up at 1x, which is exactly what you want for fast shooting. If you need magnification-independent holdovers, the CMR2 reticle version is worth a look instead.

How does Motion Sensor Technology work?

MST automatically shuts off the illumination after five minutes with no movement, then turns it back on instantly when it senses motion. Your dot is on the moment you pick up the rifle, and you're not draining batteries while the gun sits in the safe or rack.

What rifles is this scope best suited for?

It's a natural fit for AR-15s and similar carbines used for patrol, home defense, 3-gun competition, and training. The 1-6x range covers everything from across-the-room distances out to 500 yards and beyond, and at 16.2 ounces it won't weigh your rifle down. You'll need a 30mm mount, which is sold separately.
