The "M" points to the .340" base width, which is the medium dovetail sized for factory ramps found on rifles like the Marlin and Remington. If you're replacing a worn or hard-to-see bead on a lever gun or a bolt rifle with a factory ramp, this is the profile you'll usually be reaching for. Measuring your existing sight height and dovetail width before ordering is always the smart move.
These sights are made to drop into a standard dovetail, but like most quality steel replacement beads, they often run slightly oversized from the factory. That's by design, since it lets you file the base for a tight, drift-to-center fit rather than a sloppy one. That's intentional. A base that's a hair oversized lets you file it down to a precise, tight fit in your specific dovetail rather than leaving it loose. Trying to force it in without fitting can damage the base, so take a little off at a time until it starts into the ramp.
