When Magpul set out to improve the AK platform, they created the standard Zhukov handguard and proved there was serious demand for what the platform was missing. But not everyone running a Kalashnikov has a full-length barrel. The Zhukov-U addresses that by trimming 1.5 inches off the extended length, making it the go-to choice for short-barrel rifles, SBRs, pistols, and other compact setups while maintaining all the benefits that made the original popular.
The key difference isn't just the shorter overall length. By designing specifically for short barrels, Magpul also figured out how to keep your AK compatible with military-issue cleaning rods, something you couldn't do with the original Zhukov. The aluminum internal chassis runs the full length and clamps directly to the barrel, providing a rigid mounting system with zero flex. That translates to your rifle staying zeroed and your optics staying where you put them. The internal heat shield does actual work too, keeping your support hand comfortable during extended shooting sessions.
The Zhukov-U requires removing the factory handguard retainer, which is permanent. Make sure your barrel diameter is between 16.75 and 18.25 millimeters before committing. The handguard is fully compatible with UltiMAK gas tube rails if you're running optics that way. M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions give you plenty of mounting options for lights, foregrips, and sling attachments without loading unnecessary rail space. Unlike some AK upgrades, this one works on both stamped and milled receivers (just not Yugo pattern rifles or RPK-style receivers).
The extended gripping surface and forward hand placement actually improves control and target transitions compared to stock furniture.
