Instead of a bulky profile that catches on brush or clothing, this design is contoured to sit flat against your receiver while still holding all six 12-gauge shells you need. The aluminum backing plate has a non-glare anodized finish that resists corrosion, and the synthetic rubber carrier flexes just enough to keep shells secure but removable.
Compared to TacStar's original SideSaddle, the Slimline version cuts down the footprint in both directions. The aluminum plate is thinner and the shell carrier is smaller, which means fewer areas for brush or your shotgun's forend to catch. This streamlined approach makes the carrier practical for hunting in thick cover or tactical use where you need a low-profile setup. That said, some users report the synthetic rubber grip is pretty snug initially, but it breaks in with use and actually holds shells better than looser designs.
Mounting this to your Mossberg 500 or 590 is straightforward. Everything you need comes in the box, including all the fasteners and a basic instruction sheet. The carrier bolts directly to your receiver's side using factory-compatible holes, and you don't need to modify your shotgun in any way. Installation typically takes a few minutes with a screwdriver or wrench. The backing plate sits flush against the receiver thanks to its contoured shape, and the finish on both the aluminum and rubber holds up well to weather and regular use.
Most users find it works fine, but some field-grade forends (longer sporting style) may contact the saddle and interfere with operation. The TacStar 4-shell version is an alternative if your specific shotgun has this issue. Check your forend length before purchasing to be sure, or measure your existing setup if you already own the shotgun.
The synthetic rubber carrier grips shells firmly when new, and some users report it takes a few rounds of use to loosen up and find the right feel. Once broken in, shells come out cleanly and stay put during recoil. The design holds them secure without making removal a struggle.
The carrier accommodates standard 2.75-inch and 3-inch 12-gauge shells. The flexible rubber expands slightly to handle the wider diameter of 3-inch shells, so you have flexibility with your ammunition choice.
The Slimline SideSaddle is designed for the right side of the receiver on standard 500 and 590 models. If you need a left-side configuration, contact TacStar directly about options, as most pump shotguns follow the right-side receiver design. Some left-handed shooters still use the right-side mount and simply work with it during reloads.
