Description

The Tavor X95 is what happens when a proven military bullpup gets refined for the civilian market without cutting corners. The magazine well sits behind the trigger group, which is the whole point of the bullpup layout. That puts the action deep into the stock and shrinks the overall footprint to just over 26 inches, while the 16.5-inch barrel still delivers full 5.56 NATO velocity. You get the ballistics of a standard rifle in a package that handles more like a compact carbine.

IWI built the X95 as a significant step forward from the original Tavor SAR. The fire control pack has a cleaner 5-6 lb trigger pull, and the ambidextrous magazine release has been moved to an AR-style position in front of the trigger guard, which makes a real difference if you're coming from the AR world. The charging handle was repositioned closer to center mass for more natural operation, and the modular pistol grip can be swapped between the standard knuckle-bow style and a traditional pistol grip with trigger guard. The bolt release profile was also lowered to reduce the chance of unintentional activation.

The barrel itself is cold hammer-forged CrMoV steel with a chrome lining, a 1:7 right-hand twist, and six grooves. It's threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle. The gas system uses a long-stroke piston with a closed rotating bolt, which contributes to the rifle's consistent reliability across a wide range of ammunition. Built-in folding iron sights include a front blade with a tritium insert and a rear aperture, and they fold flat when you want to run an optic on the full-length Picatinny top rail. The forend also has Picatinny rails at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions under removable covers for lights, grips, or other accessories.

One of the more practical advantages of this rifle is how it accommodates left-handed shooters. The bolt handle, ejection port cover, and ejection internals can be switched to run the gun as a proper lefty without the brass-in-the-face problem that plagues most bullpups. It ships in the right-hand configuration and takes standard AR-15 STANAG-pattern magazines, so feeding it is never a headache. The FDE model pairs the Flat Dark Earth polymer chassis with black metalwork, and it ships with one 30-round Magpul PMAG Gen M3.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Tavor X95 take standard AR-15 magazines?

Yes, the X95 uses standard STANAG-pattern AR-15 magazines, so your existing Magpul PMAGs, USGI aluminum mags, and most other AR-compatible 5.56 magazines will work. It ships with a 30-round Magpul PMAG Gen M3. Keep in mind the rifle is assembled in the US under federal parts compliance requirements, so you should stick to US-made magazines.

Can the Tavor X95 be converted for left-handed shooters?

Yes, and this is one of the things that genuinely sets the X95 apart from most bullpups. The charging handle, ejection port cover, and ejection internals can all be swapped to the left side, making it a true left-hand-friendly rifle rather than a painful compromise. The magazine release and safety are already set up for ambidextrous use right out of the box.

What is the overall length of the X95, and how does it compare to a standard AR?

The X95 clocks in at just over 26 inches overall while still running a 16.5-inch barrel. A standard AR-15 with the same barrel length typically runs 35 to 37 inches, so the X95 is substantially more compact. That shorter footprint makes it easier to maneuver in tight spaces without sacrificing the velocity and range capability of a full-length rifle barrel.

What kind of gas system does the Tavor X95 use?

The X95 runs a long-stroke gas piston system with a closed rotating bolt, which is a different setup than the direct impingement used in most AR-15s. The piston system keeps combustion gases and carbon fouling away from the action, which generally means a cleaner-running rifle over extended use. It also contributes to the X95's well-documented reliability across a wide range of ammunition types.

Does the Tavor X95 come with iron sights?

It does. The X95 includes built-in folding iron sights integrated into the top rail, with a front blade that has a tritium night sight insert and a rear aperture sight. They fold flat when not in use, freeing up the full-length Picatinny top rail for an optic. It is worth noting that most owners who run an optic regularly will want to plan their mounting setup carefully, as a magnifier can sometimes block the rear sight from fully deploying.

Can the Tavor X95 be converted to shoot other calibers?

The X95 was originally designed with caliber conversion in mind, and IWI offered conversion kits for 9mm and .300 Blackout in addition to the standard 5.56. However, IWI has indicated that the 9mm and .300 BLK conversion kits have been discontinued, so availability on the secondary market can be limited. The 5.56 platform itself remains the primary and most widely supported configuration.
