Description

The Franklin Armory Reformation RS7 in .300 Blackout is a genuinely unique firearm. At the heart of it is Franklin Armory's patented NRS barrel, which uses a straight-cut land and groove design rather than traditional rifling. Because the barrel doesn't impart spin on the projectile in the conventional sense, the Reformation is classified as neither a rifle nor a shotgun. It's simply a "firearm" regulated under the GCA, which means no tax stamp, no NFA wait, and no SBR paperwork. Franklin Armory fought and won a landmark case to make this classification stick, and the RS7 is the result of that effort.

The .300 Blackout chambering makes a lot of sense for a 7.5-inch platform. The cartridge was designed with short barrels in mind and it runs efficiently at this length, whether you're running supersonic loads or going suppressed with subsonic ammo. The pistol-length gas system is well-matched to the setup, and the salt bath nitride bolt carrier is built to handle high round counts without needing a lot of babysitting.

From a components standpoint, Franklin Armory didn't cut corners on the RS7. The BFSIII AR-Essential binary trigger is a three-position unit: safe, semi, and binary mode. In binary mode, it fires one round on pull and one on release, significantly tightening split times compared to a standard trigger. The Triumvir muzzle device handles both flash suppression and linear compensation, which makes a real difference at this barrel length. The forged aluminum upper and lower receivers are finished in hardcoat anodize, the 7-inch FST handguard gives you plenty of real estate for accessories, and the full B5 furniture package includes the Bravo stock, P-Grip 23, and a vertical grip.

The flat-top upper ships optic-ready with no sights included, so you've got a clean slate to add whatever glass or red dot fits your setup. This is a purpose-built firearm for people who want compact AR ergonomics and .300 Blackout performance in a package that transfers just like any standard GCA firearm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Reformation RS7 require an NFA tax stamp or SBR registration?

No. The RS7 uses Franklin Armory's patented NRS barrel with a straight-cut land and groove design, which means it is classified as neither a rifle nor a shotgun. It is simply a GCA-regulated firearm, so it transfers through an FFL just like any standard firearm with no tax stamp and no NFA paperwork. Franklin Armory backed this classification with a successful lawsuit against the ATF.

How does the BFSIII binary trigger work on the Reformation RS7?

The BFSIII AR-Essential is a three-position trigger: safe, semi, and binary. In binary mode, it fires one round on the pull and one round on the release, which dramatically reduces split times compared to a standard trigger. If you need to cancel the release round, you can flip the selector out of binary mode while holding the trigger rearward and the round will not fire.

Is .300 Blackout a good fit for a 7.5-inch barrel?

.300 Blackout is arguably the ideal cartridge for short-barreled platforms, as it was specifically engineered to perform efficiently out of barrels in this length range. Supersonic loads still generate solid velocity, and subsonic loads run cleanly at this length, especially when paired with a suppressor. You get a lot of practical performance from a very compact package.

What kind of accuracy can I expect from the NRS straight-cut barrel?

The NRS barrel does not work the same as a traditionally rifled barrel, which is central to the platform's classification. Franklin Armory has tested the design extensively and documented around 3.5 MOA at 100 yards using standard off-the-shelf ammo. They have also developed their own fin-stabilized ammunition capable of sub-MOA performance for shooters who want to maximize accuracy potential from the platform.

Does the RS7 come with sights?

No sights are included. The flat-top upper receiver is set up for optics, so you have a clean platform to add a red dot, magnified optic, or any standard Picatinny-compatible sight system. Most buyers will want to budget for an optic or iron sights separately.

Can I run a suppressor on the Reformation RS7 .300 BLK?

.300 Blackout is one of the most suppressor-friendly pistol-caliber adjacent cartridges available, and the RS7's 7.5-inch barrel pairs well with subsonic loads for suppressed use. The Triumvir muzzle device will need to be removed to mount a suppressor, so make sure your suppressor uses a compatible mount or adapter. The platform is well-suited for this kind of setup.
