The Hogue Pillar Bed Stock for the Mauser 98 is one of those upgrades that quietly fixes a lot of problems at once. If you've got a sporterized large-ring M98 or a Czech VZ 24 wearing a tired old military stock, this drop-in replacement gives the rifle a modern feel without sending it off to a gunsmith. It's built around a rigid fiberglass-reinforced skeleton that the action beds into, then the whole thing gets wrapped in Hogue's signature soft rubber overmolding. That rubber bonds to the skeleton both chemically and mechanically, so it isn't going to peel or shift over time.
Hogue built this one to expressly drop-in fit virtually all M98 trigger mechanisms, factory or aftermarket, with no cutting required in most cases. The stock is relieved for bent-down or bent-down-and-swept-back bolt handles, and straight military handles will run in it too. The floor plate area is cut out for shorter FN floor plates without a lock screw on the front tang, and the inlet is relieved for push-button hinged box magazine doors. Screw hole spacing for the floor plate and trigger guard measures 7-13/16 inches center to center. One thing worth knowing up front: these fit the large-ring receivers, so a small-ring action won't drop in.
The barrel channel is set up to free-float most #2 and #3 taper barrels, which is where a lot of the accuracy gain comes from, and it can be opened up for heavier or stepped military profiles if needed. Out at the range and in the field, the ambidextrous palm swells with Cobblestone texturing give you a confident hold in wet or gloved conditions, and the Varminter-style forend with straight comb settles nicely into a rest or off the bag.
Sling studs come pre-installed, the length of pull runs 13-3/4 inches, and the whole stock weighs in right around 2.2 pounds. It's a practical, no-nonsense way to breathe new life into an old Mauser you actually want to shoot.
