The MDT AICS 10-round metal magazine is built around a simple premise: get more capacity without sacrificing ergonomics when you're working prone. That compact design comes from MDT's Double Stack to Single Feed (DSSF) transition—rounds sit staggered at the bottom and feed single-file at the top, keeping the magazine profile lean.
Constructed from high-strength steel, the magazine body receives a nitride finish before getting coated inside and out with Cerakote Elite. That combination handles hard use and corrosion without the friction issues that can dog feeding reliability. The binder plate design works with AICS-pattern bottom metal and chassis systems, holding cartridges back and guiding them past the feed ramp for smooth, consistent pickups.
Two internal ribs run the length of the magazine, reducing friction between the steel walls and your cartridges while managing that critical double-to-single-feed transition. The polymer feedlip inserts extend past the metal backing plate, keeping rounds captive longer and giving the bolt enough time to position itself before the rear of the cartridge releases. This geometry means reliable feeding across temperature swings and with different action types.
At roughly 3/4 inch shorter than a standard 10-round AICS magazine, this steel version handles prone mag changes without that awkward height getting in your way. It'll take the kind of rough handling that comes with field work and competition. The binder plate version maxes out at 2.870 inches cartridge overall length, accommodating factory loads and most custom reloads for .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and compatible calibers.
The metal magazine is more durable for harsh field conditions and harder use, with a nitrided steel body and Cerakote Elite finish resisting corrosion and wear. Polymer magazines are lighter and quieter but better suited to typical range work. Both use the same DSSF design and feed equally well—it's about choosing based on your use case and environment.
This binder plate version fits all AICS-pattern bottom metal and chassis systems. It works with most standard two-lug actions like Remington 700, Tikka, and most custom actions. Note that MDT tested these magazines and found they don't work out of the box with three-lug actions without minor feed lip adjustment.
The binder plate holds cartridges back from the front of the magazine and guides them past the bottom of the feed ramp, ensuring reliable pickups across different actions and feed ramp geometries. The binder plate version limits you to 2.870 inches maximum cartridge overall length, while a no-binder-plate version allows up to 2.960 inches if you reload or use longer factory loads.
Cartridges sit staggered side-by-side in the magazine body, then transition to single-file feeding at the top. This packs 10 rounds into a profile that's about 3/4 inch shorter than a standard AICS 10-rounder, making prone mag changes cleaner and keeping overall rifle length more manageable without sacrificing capacity.
