Rimfire ARs have been around a while, but the Retay RA1522 brings some fresh energy to the category. It runs a simple blowback action inside polymer upper and lower receivers, and the controls are laid out just like a standard AR: charging handle at the rear, bolt release on the left, mag release on the right, plus a functioning dust cover and molded-in case deflector. That means the muscle memory you build here carries straight over to your centerfire rifle, except you're feeding it .22 LR that costs a fraction as much per round. At 4.74 pounds it's light enough for new folks and kids to manage comfortably, and the collapsible stock adjusts overall length from 30.5 to 33.75 inches to fit just about anyone behind it.
This version of the RA1522 wears a 16 inch barrel made with Retay's dead straight deep bore drilling process and finished in black chrome for corrosion resistance. Range testing has shown it groups well at 50 yards, plenty tight for small game and rimfire matches. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, the standard rimfire pattern, so adding a suppressor or muzzle device is a five minute job. Pair it with a can and this thing becomes one of the most pleasant rifles you'll ever shoot.
The RA1522-BLK-MLOK model upgrades to an aluminum M-LOK handguard, which adds rigidity for mounting lights, lasers, and bipods compared to the polymer forend variants. A continuous full-length Picatinny rail runs across the receiver and handguard for scopes and red dots, and flip-up front and rear sights come installed so you can shoot the day you bring it home. The included 25-round polymer magazine has a follower tab that makes loading easy on the thumbs, and Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 mags will run in it too. Retay backs the whole package with a limited lifetime warranty.
Yes, Retay states that S&W M&P 15-22 magazines feed and function in the RA1522. Keep in mind it only works one direction though, since RA1522 magazines will not fit S&W rifles. CMMG-pattern rimfire mags are not compatible either, so stick with Retay or S&W mags for spares.
Absolutely. The 16 inch barrel comes threaded 1/2×28, which is the standard rimfire suppressor pattern, so most .22 cans thread right on. A suppressed .22 LR blowback rifle like this is about as quiet and pleasant as shooting gets, which makes it a great setup for new folks and long range days alike.
