Rio's Top Game HV line has earned respect from upland and dove hunters who value both performance and value. Built at their Texas facility with proprietary components made in-house, this load hits 1330 fps and carries enough shot to handle quick-moving targets at typical hunting distances.
The 1-1/4 ounce payload of #8 shot sits in that sweet spot between pattern density and individual pellet energy. It's tight enough to reliably connect on fast-moving birds without the unnecessary overkill of heavier loads. The high-velocity platform means your patterns stay efficient further out, which matters when you're chasing dove across open country or flushing upland birds from cover. High-brass construction keeps everything running smoothly through pump, semi-auto, and over-under shotguns alike.
Rio manufactures its own primers, wads, powders, and casings, which means the entire production process stays under one roof. This vertical integration—from raw materials through final assembly—gives them tighter control over quality than manufacturers sourcing components from different suppliers. That translates to shot charges that build consistent, repeatable patterns round after round. No surprises when you need precision.
This ammunition comes in Rio's Texas-themed camo box, a nod to the company's presence in Texas since 2002. It's more than just packaging though. Rio's integrated production system means these shells are engineered to run clean, pattern tight, and fire reliably in various hunting conditions.
#8 shot offers a sweet balance for fast-moving upland birds. The smaller pellets create dense patterns that connect reliably on swift targets, while the high pellet count keeps energy on target out to typical hunting ranges. It also minimizes meat damage on smaller game birds like dove and quail compared to larger shot sizes.
When Rio manufactures its own primers, powders, wads, and casings, every component is designed to work together from the start. This vertical integration means tighter quality control and more consistent ballistics shot to shot. You get predictable patterns and reliable ignition regardless of weather or conditions.
Rio Top Game HV 2-3/4" shells function in any standard 12-gauge shotgun that's chambered for 2-3/4" loads, including pumps, semi-autos, and over-unders. High-brass construction helps them cycle smoothly and eject reliably. Always verify your shotgun's specifications before purchasing ammunition.
While designed primarily for upland game hunting, the 1330 fps velocity and #8 shot payload can work for casual clay target practice. For competitive trap or skeet where ultra-consistent performance is critical, purpose-built target loads might serve you better, but these will cycle and shoot reliably for range work.
