Federal's Black Cloud High Velocity brings speed and stopping power to the marsh or open water. At 1635 feet per second, this load shaves critical distance off your lead calculations and delivers the energy to drop birds definitively. The 1 1/8 ounce payload pairs 40 percent FLITESTOPPER steel pellets with 60 percent premium steel, creating dense patterns and larger wound channels for ethical, quick kills.
The real magic sits in the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad. Instead of the old design, this rear-opening wad features redesigned petals and side vents that separate the shot at exactly the right moment. You get consistent, tight patterns whether your gun sports a ported choke or a standard one, which is huge if you swap barrels or hunt different setups. Testing shows this wad reduces pattern variation by over 35 percent compared to older designs.
Federal engineered this load to stay clean and reliable. The Catalyst lead-free primer and temperature-stable propellant reduce barrel fouling, so your gun cycles better shot after shot, especially in semiautos. The black nickel-plated head and sealed crimp keep moisture out when you're sitting in cold, wet conditions for hours. Each box contains approximately 216 pellets per shell, packed with the velocity to maintain energy at extended range.
Black Cloud has been the go-to choice for serious waterfowlers since 2007, and the High Velocity version pushes that reputation forward. The combination of shot quality, wad technology, and muzzle speed works together to put patterns right where they need to be when birds work in at the edge of range. From timber to big water, this load delivers the results hunters count on when it matters most.
Yes. The FLITECONTROL FLEX wad is specifically designed to perform consistently through both ported and non-ported waterfowl chokes. The rear-opening design and side vents allow the pellets to separate cleanly regardless of your choke configuration, which is one of the main upgrades Federal made to solve issues waterfowlers reported with older designs.
The 40/60 split of FLITESTOPPER steel and premium steel creates a payload that delivers dense patterns while the FLITESTOPPER pellets, which have a raised ridge around the middle, cut larger wound channels for more effective kills. You get the best of both worlds: tight patterning and stopping power.
Yes, the High Velocity version generates 1635 FPS compared to the standard 1450 FPS load, which translates to increased downrange energy and reduced lead times on moving targets. The trade-off is more felt recoil, but the velocity advantage is meaningful at typical waterfowl ranges.
Field testing shows the clean-burning, temperature-stable propellant and Catalyst primer reduce residue compared to other loads, particularly in semiautomatics. You won't get a squeaky-clean bore, but you'll see less buildup, which means better cycling and easier cleanup after a day of hunting.
