Description

For years, the .17 HMR and semi-auto rifles just didn't get along. The cartridge runs hotter than a standard blowback action can safely handle, so anyone who wanted the speed of a self-loader with the flat-shooting punch of the 17 was out of luck. Savage fixed that with the A17. Its delayed-blowback action uses an interrupter lug that keeps the bolt locked for a split second longer, letting pressure drop before the action opens. The result is a semi-auto that cycles .17 HMR loads reliably, round after round.

What Makes the A17 Different

The receiver is machined from case-hardened steel and comes drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver-style bases already in the box, so mounting a scope is a five-minute job. The hard chrome bolt with dual controlled round feed and an oversized handle keeps things running smooth, and the 22-inch button-rifled carbon steel barrel with a 1:9 twist wrings out the accuracy this little cartridge is known for. Feeding comes from a 10-round detachable rotary magazine that sits flush and stays out of your way when you're shooting off a pack or bipod.

A Trigger That Pulls Its Weight

Savage's AccuTrigger is the same setup that made their bolt guns famous, and it's just as welcome here. You can adjust the pull weight to your preference with the included tool, and the break is crisp enough to take full advantage of what the .17 HMR can do on prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and steel at distance. It's worth noting that CCI developed its A17 Varmint Tip load specifically for this rifle, though the action runs standard 17 HMR ammo just fine.

Built for Long Days in the Field

At around 5.6 pounds with a matte black synthetic sporter stock, the A17 carries easily and shrugs off weather that would have you babying a wood-stocked rifle. Textured grip panels on the wrist and forend give you solid purchase with gloves or sweaty hands, and the 13.5-inch length of pull fits most adults comfortably. If quick follow-up shots on varmints are your game, this is the rifle that finally made it possible in .17 HMR.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Savage A17 use a delayed-blowback action instead of standard blowback?

The .17 HMR generates more pressure than a typical straight blowback rimfire action can handle safely. The A17's delayed-blowback design holds the bolt closed a fraction longer with a locking lug, letting chamber pressure drop before the bolt travels rearward. That's the engineering that made a reliable semi-auto in this cartridge possible in the first place.

Does the A17 come with sights or a scope?

No iron sights and no scope on this model. The receiver comes drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver-style bases included in the box, so you just need rings and the optic of your choice. Given how flat the .17 HMR shoots, most folks top it with a variable scope in the 3-9x or 4-12x range.

Can I shoot any .17 HMR ammo through the Savage A17?

Yes, the action is designed to cycle standard .17 HMR loads reliably. CCI also makes an A17 Varmint Tip load developed specifically for this rifle, which runs slightly faster and is a popular pairing. Like most semi-autos, it may show a preference for certain loads, so it's worth trying a few to see what your barrel likes best.

How adjustable is the AccuTrigger on the A17?

The AccuTrigger adjusts from roughly 1.5 to 6 pounds using the included tool, so you can dial it down light for bench and varmint work or keep it a bit heavier for field carry. It breaks clean with minimal creep, which is a big part of why this rifle shoots as well as it does.
