The Stevens 301 Turkey is a break-action single shot chambered in 12 gauge with a 3 inch chamber, and it was designed from the ground up around modern turkey ammo. The 26 inch barrel is optimized for heavy TSS payloads, and the included extra-full choke tube stacks pellets tight where they count. It uses the common Win Choke thread pattern too, so swapping in your favorite aftermarket turkey choke is no problem.
At roughly six pounds, this gun carries like nothing on a long walk to the roost, and the slim single-shot profile handles fast when a tom slips in from the wrong side. The Mossy Oak Bottomland synthetic stock and fore-end blend into hardwoods and river bottoms, while the matte black barrel and receiver keep glare off your setup. Savage rounded it out with sling swivel studs and a rubber recoil pad on the buttstock, which you will appreciate when touching off stout turkey loads through a light gun.
The brass bead front sight works fine on its own and is compatible with TruGlo sight systems if you want fiber optics. Better yet, the 301 ships with a removable one-piece rail, so mounting a red dot takes minutes. Given how tight TSS patterns run at distance, a dot on this gun is a smart pairing, and plenty of hunters set theirs up exactly that way.

Yes, and it is one of the best things about this gun. It comes with a removable one-piece rail from the factory, so you can bolt on a compact red dot without any gunsmithing. If you prefer the traditional bead, just leave the rail off and keep it simple.
It ships with an extra-full choke tube designed for dense turkey patterns. The barrel is threaded for the widely used Win Choke pattern, so aftermarket turkey chokes from most major brands will screw right in. That gives you plenty of room to fine-tune patterns for your favorite load.
It is a light gun at around six pounds, so full-power 3 inch turkey loads will let you know they went off. The good news is a rubber recoil pad comes standard, and in the field you rarely notice recoil on a bird. Many hunters run TSS loads, which pattern so well you can often step down in payload.
For a lot of turkey hunters, it is the preferred setup. Turkey hunting is a one-shot game when you do it right, and the 26 inch barrel paired with the extra-full choke and modern TSS ammo produces tight, hard-hitting patterns. The break action is also about as reliable as a shotgun gets, with almost nothing to fail in cold or wet weather.
