There are plenty of small revolvers out there, but nothing quite like the NAA Ranger II. North American Arms took inspiration from the old Schofield top-break revolvers of the 1870s and shrunk the concept down to a five-shot .22 Magnum that rides in a pocket about as easily as a folding knife. Where standard NAA Minis require you to pull the cylinder pin and remove the whole cylinder to reload, the Ranger II hinges open at the top with a nudge of the release lever, and a cam-activated star ejector lifts all five spent cases clear in one motion. Drop in fresh rounds, snap it shut, and you're back in business.
This is where NAA has built its reputation since the early 1970s, and the Ranger II shows it. The frame, cylinder, and 1 5/8 inch full ribbed barrel are all stainless steel with a clean satin finish, and the machining is tight enough that the seams between parts nearly disappear. Smooth laminated rosewood bird's head grips give it a classic look, and since the grip frame matches NAA's other .22 Magnum Minis, it works with the company's existing lineup of grip panels and most NAA holsters. A polished bead front sight pairs with a notch milled into the release lever for basic sighted fire.
At roughly seven ounces loaded with five rounds of .22 WMR, this single-action mini disappears in a pocket, a pack, or a tackle box. The notched cylinder safety system lets you carry all five chambers loaded with the hammer resting safely between rounds, which is a real advantage in a gun this size. Folks use these as deep concealment backups, trail companions for hiking and fishing, and just plain fun plinkers that always seem to draw a crowd at the range. Modern short-barrel .22 Magnum defensive loads have come a long way, too, giving this little wheelgun more bite than its size suggests. The big difference is the top-break action. Standard NAA Minis require you to pull the cylinder pin and remove the cylinder completely to load or unload. The Ranger II hinges open at the front of the cylinder, and a star ejector pushes all five cases out at once, making it the fastest of NAA's minis to reload and much easier to clear at the range.
This particular model, NAA-22M-R, is the magnum-only version and ships with just the .22 WMR cylinder. NAA also offers a convertible version of the Ranger II that includes a second cylinder chambered in .22 LR for cheaper practice. If shooting both calibers matters to you, look for the convertible model number NAA-22MC-R.
Yes. The cylinder has safety notches cut between each chamber, so you can rest the hammer in a notch rather than over a live round. That lets you carry a full five rounds without worrying about a blow to the hammer setting one off, which is a feature NAA builds into all its mini revolvers.
For the most part, yes. The grip frame is identical to NAA's other .22 Magnum chambered Minis, so it accepts the company's existing grip panels, including oversized boot grips and laser grip options. The frame shape also works with most existing NAA holsters, so you have plenty of carry choices right out of the gate.
