There is a reason the CZ 457 Varmint keeps showing up at rimfire matches and on prairie dog towns alike. The .866 inch cylindrical heavy barrel is cold hammer forged, and that extra steel does more than look serious. It settles barrel harmonics down so the rifle shoots well with a wide range of ammo instead of being picky about one load. Chambered in 17 HMR, it sends those little polymer-tipped rounds out flat and fast, which makes ringing steel or thumping ground squirrels at 150 yards and beyond a very realistic proposition.
The Turkish walnut stock is shaped for the job. The American-style comb puts your eye right behind a scope, and the wide, flat forend rides a front bag or sandbag without rocking. Laser-cut stippling at the grip and forend gives you traction where you want it without chewing up your hands. It is a classic look with a purpose-built shape, and the wood on these tends to draw compliments at the range.
CZ trimmed nearly an inch off the old 455 action and slab-sided the receiver to cut weight and bulk. The bolt throw dropped from 90 to 60 degrees, so you can run lower scope rings with bigger ocular bells and still clear the bolt handle. The trigger adjusts for weight, creep, and overtravel, with a pull range that gets down into the sub-two-pound territory serious rimfire folks like. You also get a push-to-fire two-position safety and an interchangeable barrel system, so switching calibers down the road is on the table.
The receiver wears CZ's 11mm dovetail milled into the top, so grab a set of dovetail rings or an adapter rail and mount your favorite optic. There are no iron sights, and that is by design since this rifle is meant to live under glass. A 5-round detachable polymer magazine comes in the box, and spares are easy to find. At just over seven pounds bare, it carries fine for a heavy-barreled gun and settles in beautifully off a bench or bipod.
No iron sights are included, and that is intentional since this rifle is built to run an optic. The receiver has CZ's 11mm dovetail machined directly into the top, so you can mount rings made for that dovetail or add a Picatinny adapter rail if you prefer standard rings. The 60 degree bolt throw also lets you run lower rings with larger scopes without the bolt handle getting in the way.
The trigger adjusts for pull weight, creep, and overtravel, with a weight range of roughly 1.8 to 3.4 pounds. Out of the box it is already respectable, but a few minutes with the adjustments gets it crisp and light enough for serious precision work. It is one of the standout features of the 457 platform.
Yes, the 457 series uses CZ's interchangeable barrel system, so you can convert this rifle to 22 LR or 22 WMR with a barrel set and the correct magazine. It shares the same swap system that the 455 used, and barrel kits are available. That flexibility is a big part of why the 457 has such a strong following.
It is one of the best setups for that job. The 17 HMR shoots flat with a fast, frangible bullet that is well suited for varmints and small game out to around 150 to 200 yards. Pair that with the heavy barrel and adjustable trigger, and you have a rig that puts rounds exactly where you hold.
