The Geissele Super Modular Rail (SMR) MK4 9.3" is one of the most respected free-float handguards on the AR-15 scene, and for good reason. Machined from 7000-series aluminum with a Type 3 hardcoat anodized finish in Desert Tan, it hits that sweet spot between rugged and light, tipping the scale at around 11.2 ounces with hardware. The 9.3" length is the compact option in the MK4 lineup, which makes it a natural fit for carbine-length builds and short-barreled uppers where a longer rail would run past your gas block or muzzle device.
Geissele went with a slim profile here: a 1.35" inner diameter and 2.11" across the quadrants, with a 2.4" overall height. You get integrated M1913 Picatinny sections at the fore end in the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock spots for hard-mounting front sights, lights, or lasers, plus M-LOK slots running along five surfaces including the upper 45-degree quadrants. Those M-LOK slots do double duty as venting, shedding weight while letting barrel heat escape during long strings.
The heart of the design is Geissele's proprietary 2.25" barrel nut. That extended length gives you way more surface contact between the rail and the receiver, which keeps the whole platform straight and true from front to back. In plain terms, that means better zero repeatability when you pull the rail for cleaning or maintenance and put it back on. It's a detail plenty of other brands have tried to copy because it flat-out works.
This rail is built around mil-spec M4/AR-15 upper receivers. It ships with the barrel nut, but the Geissele barrel nut wrench is sold separately, so if this is your first Geissele rail you'll want to grab one to install it right. Keep in mind a gas block is not included either, giving you the freedom to run the setup you prefer.
