The CZ SP-01 Shadow has long been one of the most respected competition pistols in USPSA, IDPA, and IPSC circles, and the Shadow Custom takes that foundation and hands it off to the gunsmiths at CZ Custom before it ever ships. The result is a gun that most serious competitors spend months and real money trying to build themselves, delivered ready to run. The steel frame keeps the weight up where it counts for taming recoil, while the low bore axis inherent to the CZ 75 platform keeps muzzle flip in check during fast strings of fire.
This is not just a cosmetic package. The trigger group has been fully worked over with a CZ Custom Ghost hammer, a short-reach/short-reset disconnector kit, and tuned trigger components that bring the single-action pull down to roughly 3 to 4 pounds and the double-action into the 8 to 9 pound range. An extended firing pin and Rami firing pin spring are paired with a 13-pound mainspring and an 11-pound recoil spring to keep ignition reliable and the action cycling smoothly. The factory polymer guide rod is replaced with a stainless steel unit. All of these pieces work together in a way that has to be felt to be appreciated. The first time you dry-fire this gun next to a stock SP-01, the difference is immediately obvious.
The slide wears a fiber-optic front sight and a competition-style tactical rear sight for fast, clean target acquisition. Thin black aluminum grips slim down the grip profile compared to standard rubber or plastic panels, giving a more direct feel and helping with hand-to-gun fit for a wide range of shooters. The finish is a black polycoat and nitride combination built to hold up to heavy range use. Ambidextrous manual safety rounds out the controls. Three 19-round magazines ship with the gun, which is a genuinely useful starting inventory for anyone heading into a competition season.
The standard SP-01 is a capable pistol but ships with a heavier, grittier trigger that most competitive shooters immediately start working on. The Shadow Custom comes from the CZ Custom shop with the trigger job already done: a Ghost hammer, short-reach/short-reset disconnector, tuned trigger components, extended firing pin, and a stainless steel guide rod are all installed and function-checked before the gun ships. You're essentially getting a professionally built competition pistol rather than a starting point for one.
The single-action pull runs roughly 3.0 to 4.0 pounds and the double-action comes in around 8.0 to 9.0 pounds after the CZ Custom trigger work. These are verified with factory ammunition before the gun leaves the shop. That single-action number in particular is notably light and clean for a DA/SA pistol at this price point.
The SP-01 platform has a strong track record in USPSA Production division, IDPA SSP, and several other organized shooting sports. Because competition rules change and vary by sanctioning body, it's worth confirming eligibility with your specific club or match director before competing. The gun ships zeroed and reliability-checked with factory ammunition by the CZ Custom shop, so it is built with competition use in mind.
Yes, three 19-round 9mm magazines are included in the box. That is a solid starting point for a competition setup where having multiple loaded magazines staged is standard practice. The magazines are standard CZ SP-01 pattern and widely available if you need to add more.
It comes with thin black aluminum grips machined specifically for this model. Compared to the rubber or polymer grips found on standard SP-01 variants, the aluminum panels slim down the grip circumference for a more direct feel and better purchase, especially for shooters with medium to smaller hands. The reduced bulk also contributes to a cleaner hand-to-grip interface during rapid fire.
The Shadow Custom is really built for shooters who are already comfortable with the DA/SA manual of arms and want a gun that performs at a higher level out of the box. That said, the tuned action makes the transition easier than a stock DA/SA because the double-action pull is smoother and the single-action reset is noticeably shorter. Putting in some dry-fire time to get comfortable with the first-shot double-action before heading to the range is always a good idea with any DA/SA platform.
