Description
Trijicon built the HD XR line to answer a real problem: getting your eye to the front sight quickly, whether you're standing in bright sunlight or working in the dark. This set drops onto Smith & Wesson M&P, M&P M2.0, SD9 VE, and SD40 VE pistols, and it pairs a glow-in-the-dark yellow front outline with a green tritium lamp that keeps the dot lit around the clock. The result is a sight picture your eye locks onto without hunting for it.
What Sets the HD XR Apart From the Standard HD
The big change over the original HD sights is the front blade. Trijicon slimmed the front post down to .122 inches, which opens up more daylight on either side of it inside the rear notch. That wider field of view helps with faster target identification and cleaner hits out at distance, where a fat front post tends to swallow up your target. The tritium dot sits toward the top of the post under a domed sapphire cap that Trijicon rates as twice as bright as a standard lamp, so the aiming point stays crisp in transitional light.
Built for the Rear Sight to Earn Its Keep
The rear sight uses a subdued, blacked-out U-notch that's angled and serrated to cut glare and pull your focus forward instead of competing with the front dot. It also has a squared, hooked front edge, which lets you catch it on a belt, holster, or boot heel to rack the slide one-handed if a hand is ever out of commission. Green tritium lamps sit in the rear notch too, giving you a true three-dot picture at night.
Living With the HD XR Long-Term
Each tritium lamp is sealed in an aluminum cylinder with silicone cushioning, so it shrugs off heavy recoil and harsh cleaning solvents. The green tritium carries a 12-year warranty from the date of manufacture, which is standard across Trijicon's self-luminous line. Installation is straightforward with a sight pusher, though a lot of folks hand the job to a gunsmith to keep everything centered and clean.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will these Trijicon HD XR sights fit my Smith & Wesson?
This set is cut for the standard Smith & Wesson M&P, M&P M2.0, SD9 VE, and SD40 VE. It is not made for the M&P Shield or C.O.R.E. models, so double-check your exact frame before ordering. If you're unsure which M&P variant you have, we're happy to help you sort it out.
What's the difference between the HD XR and the regular Trijicon HD sights?
The main difference is the front blade width. The HD XR uses a thinner .122-inch front post that opens up more of your sight window for a wider field of view and better precision at distance. Everything else, including the tritium lamps, U-notch rear, and hooked slide-rack edge, carries over from the standard HD design.
Why choose the yellow front outline over orange?
It comes down to personal preference and how your eyes pick up color. Yellow tends to pop in bright daylight and against darker targets, while some folks find orange easier to distinguish. Both use the same green tritium lamp, so nighttime performance is identical between the two.
Can I install the HD XR night sights myself?
You can if you have the right tools. A quality sight pusher makes the job go quickly, and the Trijicon rear dovetail is designed to press in without filing. That said, Trijicon recommends professional installation, and plenty of owners have a gunsmith knock it out in a few minutes to keep everything perfectly centered.
