The TRP has always sat at the top of Springfield Armory's 1911 lineup, and its story goes back to the late 1990s when the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team chose the Springfield Professional 1911 as their duty pistol. The Tactical Response Pistol was built to bring those same high-end standards to a wider audience, with hand-selected slide-to-frame fitting, forged components, and a level of factory polish that most 1911s at this price point simply don't have. Now, for the first time ever, you can get that same platform in 9mm, and in the compact Carry Contour configuration to boot.
The Carry Contour frame is forged aluminum alloy, which drops the unloaded weight down to around 27.3 ounces, roughly 12 ounces lighter than a comparable all-steel Commander. The bobbed heel on the frame helps prevent printing under a cover garment without eating into your grip, and the 20 LPI checkering on the frontstrap and mainspring housing keeps everything locked in even when your hands aren't. The 4.25" hammer-forged stainless barrel runs a 1:16" twist rate and is built to match-grade specs. The slide is forged carbon steel, finished in black Cerakote for corrosion resistance, and the whole package is tight. No slop, no rattle.
The AOS optic mounting system was developed in collaboration with Agency Arms, and it's genuinely one of the better solutions on the market. Instead of milling the slide and hoping your optic footprint is supported, the AOS uses a plate system where each plate integrates a rear iron sight at the correct height for co-witnessing. Compatible footprints include Trijicon RMR, Shield RMSc, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Docter, among others. The plates are easy to swap, well-built, and the whole system sits low enough in the slide to keep the optic from feeling perched. If you want to run irons only, the front tritium dot is ready to go right out of the box.
Other details worth noting: the TRP AOS runs a Series 70-style design, meaning no firing pin safety block and the cleaner trigger feel that comes with it. The Gen 2 Speed Trigger is skeletonized, breaks crisply, and resets short. The ambidextrous thumb safety is easy to reach and positive in its detents. A Picatinny rail forward of the trigger guard lets you add a weapon light or laser without modifications. Three 9-round magazines and a soft case are included.
The AOS slide cut is machined into the gun from the factory, but you will need to purchase the specific AOS plate that matches your chosen optic's footprint. The plates are sold separately and are available for most popular red dot footprints including Trijicon RMR, Shield RMSc, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Docter. Springfield includes a coupon toward an AOS plate with the gun. If you want to run it with irons only, the front tritium sight is ready to use as-is right out of the box.
The Carry Contour frame is forged aluminum alloy, not cast, which gives it significantly better structural integrity than cheaper cast frames you might find on budget 1911s. The tradeoff for the weight savings (about 12 ounces vs. an all-steel Commander) is that aluminum frames can show wear faster at the frame rails with very high round counts, but for a carry gun this is a non-issue for the vast majority of owners. The forged carbon steel slide does the heavy lifting in the lockup equation.
The TRP line had been exclusively chambered in .45 ACP since its introduction in the late 1990s, so the 9mm offering is genuinely new territory for this platform. Beyond the historical angle, 9mm in a single-stack 1911 frame means softer recoil, lower ammo cost for training, and still-excellent terminal performance with modern hollow points. It is a natural fit for those who want the TRP experience but prefer the 9mm cartridge for carry or range work.
A lot of it comes down to how Springfield builds this gun. Every slide is hand-selected and matched to its frame, then numbered as a pair and fitted together throughout the build process. That kind of attention to fit is what separates it from production guns where slides and frames are just pulled from bins. The result is a noticeably tighter feel with zero play, a cleaner trigger break, and a gun that tends to print tight groups right out of the box.
The Carry Contour configuration was specifically designed with concealed carry in mind. The bobbed frame heel reduces printing, the aluminum frame keeps weight manageable at 27.3 ounces empty, and the 4.25" barrel shortens the overall profile to 7.9 inches. It is still a 1911, so you will want a quality inside-the-waistband holster made for the railed Carry Contour profile, and most major holster makers support this platform.
