The buffer retainer is one of those tiny parts nobody thinks about until it's missing or sheared off. It's the small spring-loaded pin that sits at the front bottom of the buffer tube and catches the buffer, keeping it and the action spring from launching across the room the second you pull your takedown pin. This Luth-AR set gives you ten complete retainers and ten springs, so whether you're building lowers back to back or just want spares in the parts drawer, you've got plenty to work with.
Each retainer runs a .247 diameter and wears a Mil-Spec manganese phosphate finish, which is the same corrosion-resistant coating you'll find on quality bolt carriers and small parts. That combination means these drop right into standard Mil-Spec lower receivers and play nice with standard buffers, from carbine weights on up. The pack breaks down to ten LR-01 retainers and ten LR-02 springs, and Luth-AR builds them stateside.
Retainers are cheap and small, which is exactly why they go missing at the worst possible moment. A spring pops loose, a retainer walks off the bench, or a head shears during a first cycle on a tricky build. Keeping a batch of ten around means you're swapping in a fresh one and moving on instead of stopping the whole job to order a single part. Armorers, shop benches, and anyone who assembles more than one AR a year tend to appreciate having the depth.
Installation is simple. With the receiver extension threaded on just far enough to expose the retainer hole, drop the spring in, set the retainer on top, then thread the buffer tube the rest of the way until the lip captures the pin. Give it a quick function check by pressing the retainer down with a punch. It should move smoothly against spring pressure and pop right back up, holding your buffer secure when the upper comes off.
It's a small spring-loaded pin at the front bottom of the buffer tube that catches and holds the buffer under spring tension. Its whole job is keeping the buffer and action spring from shooting out of the tube when you separate the upper from the lower. It isn't meant to make contact with the buffer during firing, just to make takedown and cleaning safe and clean.
Yes. These are built to Mil-Spec dimensions with a .247 diameter, so they drop into standard Mil-Spec lower receivers and work with standard buffers. If you're running a non-standard setup like some 9mm builds or a folding stock adapter, double check your buffer clearance, since shorter carriers can sometimes fail to push the buffer off the pin on reassembly.

Thread your receiver extension on until it just starts to cover the retainer hole, drop the spring in, set the retainer on top, then continue threading the buffer tube until the lip captures the pin. Test it by pressing the retainer down with a punch. It should move smoothly against the spring and pop back up on its own.
