The M&P Shield X was already a strong micro-compact option when S&W's Performance Center got hold of it. What came out the other side is the Carry Comp: a purpose-built carry pistol with a factory compensator system baked right into the barrel and slide. The 3.6-inch stainless steel barrel is fluted and ported, and the slide is ported to match. Together, they make up S&W's PowerPort system, which vents high-pressure gases upward during firing to push the muzzle down and reduce felt recoil. On a 9mm platform this slim, that difference in muzzle rise is genuinely noticeable, especially during faster strings of fire.
The frame itself carries over everything that made the Shield X worth carrying in the first place. The grip has been redesigned with a slimmer front-to-back profile compared to earlier Shield models, and the undercut trigger guard combined with a deep beavertail cut lets your hand sit higher on the frame for better control without bulk. At just 0.9 inches wide and 20.6 ounces unloaded, it disappears under a cover garment without fighting you all day. The flat-face trigger gives you a consistent finger placement every time, and the front and rear slide serrations are genuinely aggressive, not just decorative.
Out of the box, the Carry Comp is ready for a compact red dot with a flat-plane RMSc/K optic cut. S&W also incorporated a ClearSight Cut around the optic mounting area to channel gases away from your red dot lens during firing, keeping the glass clear. If you're running the gun without an optic, the Ameriglo Trooper LumiGreen front night sight co-witnesses well with the blacked-out serrated rear notch. It's a smart, practical setup whether you're adding glass or keeping it iron.
For everyday carry, the Shield X Carry Comp brings a standard accessory rail on the frame, so mounting a compact light like a TLR-7 is straightforward. The reversible magazine catch is a nice touch for left-handed carriers. No manual thumb safety on this model keeps the draw clean and consistent. It ships with both a 13-round and a 15-round magazine, giving you flexibility depending on your holster and cover garment. The Armornite finish on both the barrel and slide handles sweat, humidity, and daily wear without fuss. This is a well-thought-out carry gun from a Performance Center team that clearly put real-world use first.

The standard Shield X does not have the ported barrel or slide. Everything else, including the frame dimensions, optic cut, and sights, is essentially the same platform.
For most carry situations, the porting is a non-issue. The ports are on the top of the barrel and slide, not the sides, so they don't significantly affect holster fit or concealability. The gun still measures just 0.9 inches wide. One thing worth knowing is that, like any ported pistol, you'll want to keep the muzzle pointed downrange when firing from a compressed or retention position.
The slide uses an RMSc/K footprint, which is one of the most common micro red dot mounting patterns available. Optics like the Shield RMSc, Holosun 407K/507K, and several others mount directly without an adapter plate. It's a practical choice that covers the majority of popular compact red dots on the market.
The pistol ships with one 13-round and one 15-round magazine. M&P Shield Plus magazines use the same body and will physically fit the Shield X, but the base plates are different, so you may need to swap base plates for a flush fit. Shield X-specific magazines are the most straightforward option.
