FN doesn't usually rush into a category, and when they finally brought a double-stack micro-compact 9mm to the table with the Reflex, it showed. The MRD version takes everything that made the standard Reflex impressive and adds a direct-cut optic mount to the slide, making it compatible with Shield RMSc and Holosun 507K/407K footprint optics right out of the box, no adapter plates needed. The FDE finish gives it that unmistakable FN look, and the one-inch-wide slide profile keeps it from printing even under a lighter cover garment.
The biggest talking point on the Reflex MRD is the internal hammer-fired single-action-only system, which is genuinely rare in a gun this small. While just about every other micro-compact 9mm on the market uses a striker-fired action, FN went a different direction, and the result is a trigger that reviewers and range testers consistently rate as the best in class for this size pistol. The pull comes in at 4.5 to 5.5 pounds with a distinct wall and a clean rolling break, and it gets even better as round count builds. Another underrated benefit of the hammer-fired design: you can field strip it without pulling the trigger, which is a small but appreciated detail.
Even without a red dot mounted, the Reflex MRD comes ready to work. The steel dovetail front sight has a tritium insert with a high-visibility orange ring for fast acquisition in low light, paired with a two-dot steel rear. These aren't plastic budget sights, and the sight radius is stretched out as far as FN could manage on a 3.3-inch barrel, which makes a real difference in practical accuracy. When you do decide to add an optic, the direct-mount cut keeps the dot sitting low and tight to the slide, and FN uses self-locking nylon-patched screws so you won't need thread locker to keep it seated. The slide ships with a steel blanking plate that sits flush until you're ready to mount glass.
The frame brings a multi-faceted grip texture that varies between the front strap, rear strap, and side panels to give your hand exactly what it needs where it needs it. There's also a slimline accessory rail for a sub-compact light, a reversible magazine release for left-handed use, and a frame-mounted takedown lever that rotates 90 degrees for tool-free disassembly. This 10-round model ships with two flush-fit magazines, making it a solid option where higher-capacity mags aren't available.
The Reflex MRD slide is direct-cut for the Shield RMSc and Holosun 507K/407K footprints, so there are no adapter plates involved. Optics using the same footprint, like the Swampfox Sentinel, SIG Romeo Zero, and Riton TACTIX MPRD 2, will also mount directly. The included steel blanking plate keeps the cut protected until you're ready to add glass.
FN went with an internal hammer-fired SAO system because it allows for a cleaner, lighter trigger pull than most striker-fired designs in this size class, without relying on a heavy trigger safety as the primary means of drop protection. It also means you can field strip the pistol without pulling the trigger first, which is a safety advantage many people appreciate. The internal hammer stays completely hidden and doesn't affect the slim profile of the slide.
This specific model is the NMS (no manual safety) version. It does rely on multiple internal passive safeties, including a hinged trigger safety that prevents the trigger from moving under inertia if the pistol is dropped. For buyers who specifically want a manual safety lever, FN offers an MS variant of the Reflex MRD as a separate model.
All three are double-stack micro-compact 9mms in roughly the same size envelope, but the Reflex MRD stands out with its internal hammer-fired trigger, which most testers rate as the best in the category. The Reflex MRD also ships with steel sights on both the standard and MRD models, while some competitors use polymer. The one-inch slide width is right in line with the competition, and the direct-mount optic system sits noticeably lower than some plate-based setups.
