There aren't many guns that make people stop and ask questions at the range, but The Earl is one of them. North American Arms took their famously small single-action platform and dressed it up like an 1860s percussion revolver, complete with a faux loading lever under the barrel that doubles as the latch securing the cylinder pin. Add the heavy octagonal 3 inch barrel, the channel sight cut into the top strap, and the bead front sight, and you've got a mini revolver that looks like it rode straight out of the Old West era, just scaled way down.
This is the convertible version, which means you get a .22 Magnum cylinder plus a .22 LR conversion cylinder in the box. That second cylinder is sized to fit the magnum frame, and swapping between the two takes just a minute. Run bulk .22 LR when you're burning through a lazy afternoon of plinking, then drop in the magnum cylinder when you want more pop. The frame, cylinder, and barrel are all stainless steel, so it holds up to real use without babying, and the rosewood boot grip gives it a warm, classic finish that suits the styling perfectly.
Operation is pure old-school single action. Cock the exposed hammer for each shot, and use the safety notches machined between the chambers so the hammer rests securely with all five rounds loaded. This model, the NAA-1860-3C, is the convertible version and ships with both cylinders. You get the .22 Magnum cylinder installed plus a .22 LR conversion cylinder that's built longer to fit the magnum-length frame. Swapping them over is quick and requires no tools beyond your hands.
It's styled after the loading levers found on 1860s percussion revolvers, but on The Earl it serves a different job. The faux lever secures the cylinder pin in place, which is what gives the gun its distinctive cap-and-ball profile. To load or unload, you release the lever, pull the cylinder pin, and remove the cylinder from the frame.
Yes. NAA machines safety notches into the cylinder between the chambers, and resting the hammer in one of those notches keeps it off any live round. That lets you load all five chambers instead of leaving one empty like you would with an old-style single action. Just follow the owner's manual procedure for setting the hammer in the notch.
Most owners treat it as a plinker, trail gun, or conversation-starting collectible. The heavy octagonal barrel and clean single-action trigger make it surprisingly accurate for its size at close range, and loaded with snake shot it makes a handy companion on the ranch or trail.
