There is something about a 28 gauge over/under that just feels right in the hand, and the Pointer Acrius nails that feeling without emptying your wallet. At around 5.2 pounds, this little double carries like a dream through a long day of quail or dove hunting, and the 28-inch chrome-lined barrels give you the smooth, deliberate swing that shorter guns can't match. The Turkish walnut stock and forend are paired with a laser-engraved floral coin finish receiver and blued barrels, so it looks the part of a classic field gun too.
Pointer built this one with the details that matter. The tang-mounted safety doubles as your barrel selector, the mechanical triggers break clean, and extractors lift your spent hulls for easy plucking. Up front, a red fiber optic sight grabs your eye fast in dim timber or bright skies. The raised ventilated rib keeps your sight plane consistent, and the 2.75-inch chambers handle everything the 28 gauge world has to offer. A black rubber butt plate caps things off, not that the soft-shooting 28 needs much help in the recoil department.
Instead of locking you into one pattern, the Acrius ships with five interchangeable choke tubes: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. The Beretta Mobil-style threading means aftermarket options are easy to find down the road. Screw in the IC for close-flushing birds, tighten up to Modified for clays, or run Full when shots stretch out.
The Acrius series hits a sweet spot. It is light enough and mild enough for a newer shooter learning the ropes, but the balance and handling will keep experienced upland hunters reaching for it season after season. With a 14-inch length of pull and 45.2 inches overall, it fits a wide range of frames. If you have been curious about the 28 gauge, this is an easy way to find out what the fuss is about.
It is one of the better entry points into the over/under world. The 28 gauge has very light recoil, the gun itself only weighs about 5.2 pounds, and the mechanical triggers and tang safety keep operation simple. It works well for newer wing shooters and for experienced hunters who want a lightweight upland gun.
It ships with five internal choke tubes: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. The barrels use Beretta Mobil-style threading, which is one of the most common patterns out there, so finding aftermarket tubes later is easy.
This model uses extractors, which lift the spent shells out of the chambers so you can pull them by hand. Many upland hunters prefer extractors since your empty hulls stay with you instead of flying into the brush, and it keeps the action simpler.
The 28 gauge shines on quail, dove, grouse, and other upland birds, and it is a blast on the skeet field or sporting clays course. With the 2.75-inch chambers and the included Full choke, it can stretch its legs further than most people expect. It carries a surprisingly effective payload with a fraction of the recoil of a 12 gauge.
