The VP9A1 X is what happens when H&K takes the shorter slide and 4.09 inch barrel from the VP9A1 K and drops them onto the full size grip frame of the VP9A1 F. It is the crossover formula that has worked so well for other pistols in this class: a slide short enough to handle quick and carry comfortably, sitting on a grip long enough for a full firing hand and serious capacity. You get 17+1 with the flush magazine and 20+1 with the extended mag, and HK includes one of each in the box.
The original VP9 built its reputation on ergonomics and a trigger that punches above its class, and the A1 update sharpens both. The trigger gets a nickel-Teflon coated trigger bar for a smoother pull, the frame adds a factory flared magwell for faster reloads, and the slide picks up additional front and rear serrations along with a serrated top surface that gives your eye a clean reference point when presenting the gun. The interchangeable backstraps and side panels are still here, so you can dial in the grip to fit your hand instead of the other way around. Controls are fully ambidextrous, including the paddle style mag release that lefties tend to appreciate once they get used to it.
The slide comes cut from the factory and works with a system of nine adapter plates covering most of the popular red dot footprints, so mounting your optic of choice does not require a trip to the machinist. Until you bolt one on, the tritium front sight and blacked out serrated rear from XS Sights give you a fast, uncluttered sight picture that still glows in low light.
At 26.56 ounces with a cold hammer forged, polygonal rifled barrel, this pistol soaks up recoil and holds its accuracy through high round counts. It fills the duty, home defense, and range gun roles equally well, and the German build quality is evident the first time you rack the slide.
The X is a crossover build. It takes the compact slide and 4.09 inch barrel from the VP9A1 K and mounts them on the full size grip frame of the VP9A1 F. That gets you a shorter, quicker handling slide without giving up full grip real estate or the 17 and 20 round magazine capacity.
The slide is cut for HK's adapter plate system, with nine different plates available that cover most popular red dot footprints, including common micro dots. You will need the correct plate for your specific optic, and those are sold separately. Once the plate is installed, mounting is straightforward with no gunsmithing required.
It ships with one 17 round flush fit magazine and one 20 round extended magazine. Since the X uses the full size VP9 grip frame, it runs standard full size VP9 17 round and 20 round magazines, which are widely available.
The A1 generation adds an improved trigger with a nickel-Teflon coated trigger bar, a factory flared magwell, extra front and rear slide serrations, a serrated slide top for a clean visual reference, and refined ambidextrous controls. The interchangeable backstrap and side panel system carries over, so grip fit is still fully adjustable.
