Most Mossberg 500 stocks and forends fit as well, though keep in mind the Maverick's safety is on the trigger guard rather than the tang.
Mechanically they are very close cousins, sharing the same basic action with dual extractors, twin action bars, and steel-to-steel lockup. The main differences are the Maverick's cross-bolt safety located at the front of the trigger guard instead of the 500's tang-mounted safety, plus simpler furniture that keeps the cost down. The Maverick 88 is assembled in Texas using some imported parts.
The 3 inch chamber handles both 2-3/4 inch and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. That covers everything from light target birdshot up to magnum buckshot and slugs. The fixed cylinder bore choke works well with buckshot and rifled slugs at defensive distances.
This model holds 7 rounds of 2-3/4 inch shells in the extended magazine tube plus one in the chamber, for 8 total. That is a nice bump over the 18.5 inch Security version, which carries 5+1. Running 3 inch shells will reduce tube capacity slightly.
