The .460 S&W Magnum is one of the fastest revolver cartridges ever put into production, and the 460XVR is the gun Smith & Wesson built to wring every bit of speed out of it. XVR stands for X-treme Velocity Revolver, and that name is earned. Built on the massive stainless X-Frame, this Performance Center version pairs a 7.5-inch stainless barrel with a factory muzzle brake that takes real bite out of the recoil. An integral scope base sits right on top, so mounting a handgun scope or red dot is about as simple as it gets. That matters, because this cartridge stays flat enough to make 200 yard shots on game a realistic proposition with a good optic and steady rest.
This is not the standard production gun. The Performance Center crew fits it with a tuned action, chrome teardrop hammer, and a chrome trigger with an overtravel stop, so the single action break is crisp in a way you notice the first time you cock it. The unfluted cylinder adds a little extra mass right where you want it, and the synthetic grip does a fair job soaking up what the brake does not. Iron sight duty falls to a green HiViz fiber optic front and an adjustable white outline rear, a solid setup if you would rather run it without glass.
Here is the part a lot of folks overlook: this revolver also chambers .454 Casull, .45 Colt, and .45 Schofield. That means you can burn mild .45 Colt loads for cheap practice sessions, step up to .454 for a middle ground, and save full-house .460 loads for hunting season. Few big bore handguns offer that kind of range in one cylinder.

You can. The Performance Center 460XVR comes with an integral scope base machined right into the barrel assembly, so you can mount a handgun scope or red dot without buying extra hardware. Given how flat the .460 S&W shoots, a good optic really lets this gun stretch its legs at hunting distances.
Full-power .460 loads have plenty of push, no way around that, but this gun manages it better than you might expect. The nearly 78-ounce weight, factory muzzle brake, and rubbery synthetic grip all work together to keep it controllable. Most people find it stout but very manageable, especially compared to lighter big bore handguns.
