There are lightweight hunting rifles, and then there is the Impulse KLYM. This is Savage swinging for the fences: a straight-pull action wrapped in premium carbon fiber from two of the biggest names in the business. The 24-inch barrel is a PROOF Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel cut-rifled tube, and the stock comes from Fine Ballistic Tools (FBT) with carbon fiber throughout and a one-button adjustable comb so you can dial in your cheek weld for whatever glass you mount. All in, the rifle comes in around 6.7 pounds, which is the kind of weight you notice on day three of a backcountry elk hunt.
Instead of the traditional lift-pull-push-drop bolt throw, the Impulse cycles with a single straight pull and push, which means faster follow-ups without breaking your cheek weld or losing your sight picture. The Hexlock system uses hardened bearings to lock the bolt into the receiver barrel extension. The bolt handle is removable, threaded 5/16×24 with a carbon fiber knob, and can be swapped to either side, so left-handed hunters are not stuck making do. Up top, the aluminum receiver has an integral one-piece 20 MOA rail machined in, so there are no bases to work loose and you get extra elevation built in for stretching the 6.5 PRC out where it likes to work.
The 6.5 PRC is a natural fit here. It carries energy well past where a 6.5 Creedmoor starts running out of steam, bucks wind nicely, and does it with recoil most folks can manage, especially with the included Omniport muzzle brake on the 5/8×24 threaded muzzle. Prefer a suppressor? Spin the brake off and thread one on. The user-adjustable AccuTrigger lets you tune pull weight down to a crisp break, and the two-position tang safety sits right under your thumb. It feeds from a 2-round detachable box magazine, and the whole package is finished to shrug off the weather that mountain hunts throw at you. This is a serious rifle for hunters who count ounces and expect their first shot, and their second, to land where they are looking.
Instead of lifting and rotating a bolt handle, you just pull straight back and push straight forward to cycle. Savage's Hexlock system uses hardened bearings that expand into the barrel extension to lock everything up when the rifle fires. The practical benefit is speed: you can run the bolt without coming off the scope, which makes follow-up shots on game noticeably quicker.
Yes, and that is one of the underrated perks of this platform. The bolt handle is removable and can be repositioned to either side of the receiver, so lefties can run it naturally without hunting for a dedicated left-hand model. The tang safety is also centered, which works the same from either shoulder.
The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, which is the standard pitch for most 30 caliber and 6.5mm suppressors and muzzle devices. It ships with the Omniport muzzle brake installed, so you can run the brake for recoil reduction or swap on a can. Just check that your suppressor mount matches the thread pitch and you are set.
No, it ships without sights or optics, but it is set up better than most for mounting glass. The 20 MOA Picatinny rail is machined as one piece with the aluminum receiver, so there are no separate bases to shift or come loose. You will just need rings sized for your scope tube, and the built-in 20 MOA cant gives you extra elevation for long-range work.
